Summit of Allt y Main NW-059    SOTA Beam on Allt y Main NW-059

Awaking early morning in the dark in my Youth Hostel bed, I was keen for an early start.  I glanced at the alarm clock of the other chap in the dormitory, which I could see from my bed.  7.46am it said, and I felt refreshed after a good sleep, so no time to waste and I quickly got dressed and went down to get my boots out of the drying room and get cracking.  However, when I got downstairs, I noticed that all the clocks were claiming 1.10am - I had managed to read the alarm set time on the clock in the dorm!  I went back to bed! When I did get up, I decided to try Pole Bank G/WB-005 as my first port of call, again to bag the 3 winter bonus points even though I had already claimed the 2 points there earlier in 2003.   However, the road up from Bridges was too icy, and I was not going to risk getting stuck like a couple of fellow hostellers had done.  So I reversed and headed up to Welshpool, and out on the A490.  After crossing the A495 and continuing on the A490 to Bwlch y cibau, I turned left and immediate right onto the road which runs along to the north-west of the Allt y Main GW/NW-059 ridge.  I parked in a convenient pull-in and started my walk on the PROW at SJ 159 157. There is a track, not noted on the OS maps, that runs along the purple boundary marker from the forest to the trig point.  At the summit there is a convenient bench, so again the guying kit for the SOTA Beam was surplus to requirements, and I was soon set-up.  I missed a summit-to-summit with Mark M0DEV/P on the Stiperstones G/WB-003, but at least got the chaser points by working him from my car before I started my walk.  I did work six stations from the summit, including G4JZF, MW0YLS/P (at GW4BVE's QTH), M0DFA/P (not on a summit) and GW4BVE himself.  I then arranged to meet Shirley to jointly activate Y Golfa NW-061 later on.

Thanks to the following stations worked, all on 2m FM with 2.5 watts, except for the second where 0.5 watts was used:

G4JZF Walsall Graham
MW0YLS/P Pool Quay Shirley
M0DFA/P Copthorne Dave
2E1HKT S E Worcestershire Derek
GW3WWN/M South Wales Wyn
GW4BVE Pool  Quay John
