So the GI SOTA trip had come to an end, and we drove off the ferry into Mainland Birkenhead, and immediately followed the signs for the Mersey Tunnel. I think the toll was £1.30 which was well worth it to avoid the extra 45 minutes on the journey and extra £3 worth of diesel. In any case, it seemed that almost as soon as we emerged the tunnel on the Liverpool side that we were on the target A580 road, and looking for the left turn to Billinge. In Billinge, we tried to remember the left turning that Riley showed us last year. We didn't recognise anything, but realised we must have gone past it, so turned around and found it at the second attempt. We parked up at the end of the track and walked along the path and past some kind of electricity substation, and up onto the summit. I erected the SOTA Beam using the wire fence to support the walking pole, and just one guy on the WASP to hold it more firmly. This meant that the beam was about 1m higher than usual. We sat in shelter between the brick wall and the wire fence, and worked 23 contacts on 2m FM, 2m SSB and 70cm FM, all on the ISWL club callsign GX4BJC/P. We packed up at 10.45am local, and drove home for Sunday lunch, and to be reunited with Marianne!
