On Saturday 13th June 2015, I took myself off out to bag a couple of summits in the SOTA 6m/10m Challenge. First stop was the grotty Billinge Hill, county top of St Helens Unitary Authority. Somewhat bored of the usual approach from Beacon Road to the East of the summit, I parked on Crank Road to the West. I walked up a track, through a gap in the fence and to the summit on a well-used path.
I set up the special 6m/10m groundplane antenna made specially for me by Richard G3CWI of SOTAbeams. This has two radials optimised for 6m and two optimised for 10m. A trap is used in the vertical radiating element to allow for the two-band operation, without user adjustment necessary. It worked a treat and I flicked between the two bands at my leisure throughout the activation, racking up a total of 27 QSOs. Next, I drove East across Lancashire to Winter Hill G/SP-010.
