The final full day of our week's holiday in Pembrokeshire would begin with yet another 5am get-up. We were in the car shortly after 5.30am, en route to Brandy Hill. Jimmy directed me to the town of Narberth, and then the village of Tavernspite, from where the minor road run along the 'ridge' line of Brandy Hill. We didn't go all the way to the highest point of the road next to the gate to the transmitter compound, but pulled into a bit of space 200m earlier by an entrance to a field.
We walked through this field to the trig point, which was on the boundary of the transmitter compound, but on the field side of it. We took a couple of photos then set up for 20m. Just as we were ready to begin, some 'proper' rain started, so we unleashed the big bothy bag before doing anything else. Once inside there, and remaining nice and dry, Jimmy started calling CQ SOTA on 20m SSB. It was a bit slow going, with conditions on 20m resembling what they had been 40m during the week. But four contacts were recorded without spending a great deal of time, and with that, Jimmy was off, to walk with the camera to the transmitter gate, and then to wait for me in the warmth and dry of the car!
On 20m CW, the story remained the same. Gone were the characteristic never-ending pile-ups normally experienced on this band/mode combination, to be replaced by a flat four contacts, with 75% of them dropping into Slovakia. And then silence - nobody else calling at all, despite a couple of further CQ calls from me. I didn't mind - it was a dreadful SOTA summit, one of the worst, and I was more interested in returning to the cottage for a decent breakfast and a shower.
We were back at Llys-y-fran well before 9am, and Marianne and Liam both slept in until well after 11am! The heavy rain remained for the day, so the lads and I went to the local Blue Lagoon water park, while Marianne got the packing and tidying up organised in the cottage, ahead of our return north the following day. It was back to Tafern Sinc in Rosebush for more of that delicious local meat later to complete the Pembrokeshire holiday. Many thanks to all the chasers that supported the 2 x 10 activations in the week.
