Cairngaver GI/MM-017 is grouped in the Mourne Mountains region, but is in reality a long way both in distance and characteristic away from the Mournes, an area I am yet to, but keen to visit. It is a satellite of Belfast, and we reached it by driving back down the M2 into the city centre, and out on the A2 Bangor road. We turned right on the B170, and then left on a minor road. Near the highest point of this road was a track signed "Cairngaver Farm", and we drove up this, past the farm and up to the transmitter masts, next to which was ample parking space. From here, it was a short walk through some trees and across a field to the trig point. The trig point was on a bank, behind which we could shelter completely from the wind, so the SOTA Beam and WASP were set up by the trig, with the SOTA Pole length feeder trailing down to the operating position, 2m lower than the base of the mast! The summit was qualified quickly on 2m FM with the local guys, and I did even have a successful contact on 2m SSB this time - but it was George GI4SRQ again, and no further takers from over the water. We completed a quick descent and drove back through Belfast to Larne for tea.
Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 0.5 watts, except the final contact made on 2m SSB with 5 watts:
