Easington Fell 2003

This summit was activated on Saturday 12th July 2003, by myself, accompanied as usual by Jimmy & Liam.   We took the M60 anticlockwise up the East side of Manchester, then the M66 and A56 beyond Rawtenstall and continued on the A59 to Clitheroe.   In Clitheroe, we looked for the left at a roundabout onto the B6478.  After driving through the village of Waddington, we looked out for the radio transmitter on our left on Waddington Fell, which was our cue for the imminent car park on the right.

From the car park, it was a few yards back South down the B6478 and then left (Eastwards) through the sheep field on a public footpath.  We were met by the path coming  from a little further North on the B6478.  We expected there would be a track cutting across to the PROW at SD 731 484, and we were right.  However, the marked PROW from here up to SD 729 485 was poorly maintained and unwalkable.  Instead, we followed a sheep track in the field to the left of us before hopping over a fence at the end and reaching the summit, not marked on the map other than by a spot height, but marked in the field with a few small rocks.  This is a very easy walk, only about 20 leisurely minutes each way and hardly any ascent (44m).  The route for future reference and recommendation, and indeed the route of descent is (in ascending order):   When meeting the path from further North on the B6478, turn sharp left onto this path to the stile over the wall, then turn right and follow the wall up to the summit.

We spent a very pleasant hour and a half sat on the grassy summit in hot sunshine, with a little breeze to help moderate the temperature.  Following descent, we drove back down into Waddington and had a fine lunch and pint at The Higher Buck.  We were back in Macc shortly after our target time of 4pm, but still in plenty of time for me to drive on to my gig on the Wirral peninsular.
