This summit was activated on Sunday 26th March 2006 - Mothers' Day. The best way to avoid a grumpy mum returning from a night-shift to a total absence of waiting cards or presents was to be out of the house before she got in. This was achieved with plenty of time to spare despite having an hour cruelly snatched from us some time after Match of the Day.
As we parked in the large area by the stile that leads up to Gun G/SP-013, the weather was dark, cloudy, cold and very windy. I then discovered that my fleece was hanging over the banister at home. Thankfully, I had a leather jacket in the boot, so that became the outer coat, and my walking jacket took the place of the fleece in my layers. Gaiters and boots on, we set off up the very watery path armed with Yaesu handhelds and Baxters Royal Game (pheasant & venison) soup. As we arrived on summit, it began to rain, and the wind worsened. Jimmy M3EYP/P made four contacts on his VX-110 while I logged, and then I made four contacts on my VX-7R - while I logged. Something rather asymmetrical there I reckoned. As we started our descent from the summit, we noticed that Liam was already back at the car. Soon enough, so were we. It had been too horrid at the summit to serve up the soup, so we did this in the comfort and warmth of the car, while I had a couple of casual QSOs on the FT-817. Then, straight over to The Cloud G/SP-015. Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 5 watts:
On Wednesday 7th June 2006, I returned for a late summer's afternoon activation. I could get used to this. Or addicted. Whatever, last night's bask in the warm sunshine on The Cloud G/SP-015 had me drooling for more, so I went straight from work to the parking spot for Gun G/SP-013. Still no points in it for me, just the fun of the walk, the views and a few radio contacts. I reached the trig point on Gun just as another walker was photographing the plate and serial number on the column. I quizzed him and got him to admit he is registered on TrigpointingUK.com! I fired up the Yaesu VX-7R and made six contacts - 5 on 2m FM and one on 70cm FM. Steve GW7AAV was able to work me on 70cm, but not on 2m which was interesting. I returned to the car and cut across the Staffordshire countryside to Cloudside for yet another ascent of The Cloud G/SP-015. Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 5 watts, except for GW7AAV on 70cm:
