Gun 2007

Click to return to summit index

An evening, well late afternoon at Gun was enjoyed on 23rd May 2007. I had an unexpected window of opportunity to do one of my on-the-way-home-from-work activations. But, with it being, indeed, unexpected, I had already done The Cloud G/SP-015 early that morning before work. So my first visit of the year to Gun it had to be.

40m dipole on Gun        Trig point on Gun summit

I set up down the grass bank from the trig, in the lee of the prevailing wind. 40m CW brought five consecutive German stations, before four consecutive English and Welsh stations on 2m FM completed the activation. Then I went home and had me tea.

DL3JPN Oberlungwitz Steffen 40m CW 2.5 watts
DL7RAG Tirschenreuth Heinz 40m CW 1 watt
DJ5AV Heiligenberg Michael 40m CW 2.5 watts
DL2DXA Dresden Bernd 40m CW 1 watt
DL3HWO Raguhn Herbert 40m CW 1 watt
GW7AAV Connahs Quay Steve 2m FM 2.5 watts

I had almost forgotten that Jimmy had yet to activate this local hill in 2007. Until he forcefully reminded me.

An opportunity to visit arose on Monday 30th July 2007, and we enjoyed a pleasant hour on summit working through many stations on 2m FM.

We were originally going to move on to The Cloud G/SP-015 afterwards, but the wind was getting stronger and colder, and this was sure to be worse on that exposed summit. We went home instead.

Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 5 watts:

GW8YDC/M Snowdon NW-001 John T, J
GW0DSP Connahs Quay Mike T, J
G4JZF Walsall Graham T
2E0NHM Warton Nigel T

Following a short activation of The Cloud G/SP-015 on Sunday 9th September 2007, we took the short drive up to the edge of Gun Moor, and set off on the ten minute walk to the summit of Gun G/SP-013. Liam seemed to be full of energy, and summited ahead of me for the second time in the day. First heard upon switching the Yaesu VX-110 on was Steve G1INK/P on Birks Fell G/NP-031. I called a few times, but he obviously couldn't hear me. Serves me right for the selfish operating conditions!

I did make six other contacts on 2m FM though, and rather unusual to get more contacts on here than on The Cloud G/SP-015 earlier. Eleri MW3NYR/P on Aran Fawddwy GW/NW-007 gave me a summit-to-summit in the activation. Steve G1INK and Birks Fell G/NP-031 go into the SWL log!  Thanks to:

M0RDR Winsford Rob
MW3NYR/P Aran Fawddwy NW-007 Eleri

Another lovely afternoon on Thursday 13th September 2007, and another lovely walk after work. I did both The Cloud and Gun, and thoroughly enjoyed the fresh air and views. It was very quiet on 2m FM on both summits, but in each case I lowered myself and begged for a chat from stations on the GB3MN repeater! (Yes, I know, it's easy for all to spot a number crunching saddo!).

Things improved, and a nice contact from Gun was S2S with Dave MW0DFA/P on Y Garn GW/NW-004, after which I started a QSO with Barry M3PXW. He disappeared abruptly though, before we had fully exchanged, so that one got away. Hope all was OK Barry.

Nonetheless, by now my ego was sufficiently boosted, so after a few more unanswered calls, I descended a happy bunny.  Beautiful afternoon. Many thanks to:

MW0DFA/P Y Garn NW-004 Dave
G6LCS/M Pott Shrigley to Kettleshulme John

Another Cloud/Gun double on Friday 14th September 2007. Four contacts on Cloud and three on Gun:

GW0DSP Connahs Quay Mike
G4JTP/M Parbold Hill Howard
G0AOD Tutbury Dave

Liam's mate Ben is a nice lad, and he comes to the footy with us on a Saturday. This time on 15th September 2007, I invited him to be collected a few hours earlier for some fresh air and fun (cf: 'Albert & The Lion').

How could we possibly spend the extra time before kick-off? Why, Cloud and Gun of course! The fact it was a Saturday, combined with having two operators on this side seemed to really boost the number of contacts we made, plenty on both hills, despite working conditions being only 2m handhelds and rubber ducks, although the SLAB provided a reliable power source.

Very enjoyable, which was just as well, because the football wasn't...  Thanks to:

GW7AAV Connahs Quay Steve J
M3VPM Bolton Paul J
GW0DSP Connahs Quay Mike J
M3OUA Sale Les J, T
G0AOD Tutbury Dave T
2E0ISQ Billinge Russ T
M3EYP/M Gun Moor Jimmy T

It was Subject Departments meetings after work on Tuesday 18th September 2007, so no flyer just after 3pm! Still, I was away after a reasonably productive meeting by 4.15pm, and en route via the lanes over Biddulph Moor to Gun.

There were loads of people walking across the moor, exercising their dogs and the odd one or two touching the trig. I made 5 contacts on a very quiet 2m FM band, in the hostile icy wind. A quarter of an hour was plenty of summit time, before I decided that the inside of my car was the more attractive option.  Thanks to:

GW7AAV/M Connahs Quay Steve
2E0SOT/M Cobridge Dave
M0JDK Swadlincote John
2E0VTS Stafford Peter
M3XMC Wigan Mike

A second consecutive after-school activation took place on Wednesday 19th September 2007.  Just ten minutes operating on 2m FM with a hand-portable transceiver netted the following:

GW0DSP Connahs Quay Mike
M1CUE/M Crewe Kevin
M0SGB Bury Steve
M3PXW Ellesmere Port Barry

After descending from The Cloud G/SP-15 on Thursday 20th September 2007, I squelched into the driving seat still in full waterproofs with all radios, logbook and pencil in pockets so as to minimise time spent at parking spots. I did remove my fleecy hat though and allowed my head to breathe.

The drive across to Gun was under dark skies and heavy rain. As I parked and set off along the waterlogged path to Gun summit, I was grateful that my Berghaus jacket, Rite in the Rain notepad and Yaesu VX-7R all had one thing in common - waterproof. The squelch from my feet was now equally from my soaked socks and trainers as from the wet boggy terrain.

Calls on S20 again produced nothing, so again I stooped to soliciting on the repeater. However, there is now a crowd on there that is getting quite into working the early morning activations while driving to work, and they are always keen to QSY. I closed down shortly after 7.30am BST and set back off for the car.

The question now was if I could get to work in time from this location, requiring a new route across to Tunstall. Incredibly, the skies cleared, the views opened up and the sun shone as I drove across Biddulph Moor, indicating that the wet weather for my activations was merely a brief prelude to a potentially nice day. I arrived at work with 5 minutes to spare, and enough time to strip of the muddy wet gear and replace with shirt, tie and a suit.

Certainly an invigorating start to the day!  Many thanks to the following stations:

G6LCS/M M60 Sale Water Park John
M3LUE/M A580 Keith

I was awake before my alarm again on the morning of Friday 21st September 2007.  So I decided to do both summits before work again. This time I swapped the order and drove out on the A523 to Gun first. It was still partially dark as I began the walk to the summit. It was a bit early to be making lots of contacts, as it tends to be whenever you begin to write "05" in the logbook! However, G6LCS/M and GW0DSP were worked, and I just love the early walk and fresh air - that's what it's all about.  And then off to The Cloud G/SP-015...   Thanks to:

G6LCS/M between Kettleshulme & Pott Shrigley John
GW0DSP Connahs Quay Mike

The morning of Wednesday 26th September 2007, was another early get-up for me, and an opportunity to do a couple of summits on the way to work. It wasn't raining, but it was still very damp and boggy underfoot on the walk up to Gun G/SP-013. At the summit, it was icy cold in the wind, and I was pleasantly surprised to make 4 contacts.

When doing two activations before having to be at work (17 miles away) by 8.30am in the morning, it is crucial to know how long it takes to get from one to the other. After driving away from Gun, I realised that I had just enough time to do The Cloud G/SP-015.  It turned out that my first contact, stood on the base of the trig point on The Cloud, was 31 minutes after my last contact on Gun. 4 contacts were made here as well, but then there were no further takers.

I was back in the car at 7.59am, and into staff briefing at 8.29am. Thanks to all stations who called in:

G7GQF Runcorn Ron
G3GAH Penketh Dave
GW0DSP Connahs Quay Mike
G6LCS/M A5102 / A538 John

The original idea was to do Gun and Cloud as a pair before work on Thursday 27th September 2007.  It was even colder on Gun this morning, but dry and clear. In half-an-hour I made just one contact on 2m FM, and that was mugged from the repeater. Guess it serves me right for not alerting or spotting hi!

By the time that contact did come, it was too late for squeezing in The Cloud before work, so I put out a few more calls, alas to no avail.

Friday 28th September 2007.  Gun done.  My 200th G/SP SOTA activation. 2m FM, 4 contacts. Thanks to Mike for the spot, and to the following stations worked:

GW0DSP Connahs Quay Mike
G0AOD Tutbury Dave
G8VZT Wellington Dave
G7AAV/M Ellesmere Port Steve

Sunday 7th October 2007.  Looking across as we descended The Cloud G/SP-015, and still as we parked up on Gun Moor by the Rushton Spencer to Meerbrook road, the weather looked horrible on the summit.  It looked grey, cold and damp. But in fact it was mild, warm and still, although it was indeed grey. It was too still in fact, with a few midges taking an unhealthy interest in my hair on the summit!

Jimmy made four contacts on 2m FM, and unashamedly advertised his Dad's imminent 70cm activation! I then made three contacts each on 70cm FM and 2m FM.  A pint of Flowers IPA at The Rushton Inn rounded off the day.   Thanks to the stations that worked us:

GW0DSP Connahs Quay Mike 2m FM J, T
G3CWI Macclesfield Richard 2m FM J
GW4BVE Pool Quay John 70cm FM T
G3CWI Macclesfield Richard 70cm FM T

G0VVT Fenton Eddie 2m FM T
M3EYP/M Gun Moor Jimmy 2m FM T

The original plan for the last weekend in October was for Liam to go to cub camp on the Friday, and Jimmy and myself head off in search of an 8-pointer in Snowdonia, to put me at Mountain Goat on the Saturday.  Liam was not well enough to go on the Friday night, but was the following morning. Jimmy was poorly himself on the Saturday morning, 20th October 2007, so even had to miss out on his contingency activity of going gliding with Air Cadets. He reluctantly retreated back to bed, while Marianne was sleeping anyway ahead of her night-shift. That left me with Liam to taxi down to the scout camp near Leek, and a day to kill on my own.

I dropped Liam off at the cub camp, and then put him and 17 other cub and beavers through the practical bit of their Communicator Badge - "To pass a message using amateur radio". They all loved it, and Liam was surprisingly impressive when it was his turn. Of course he was the one that wasn't nervous and knew what to say; I guess he has kind of seen it all before!

After this pleasant couple of hours at the camp, during which contact was made with other cubs and scouts at their own JOTA events, I realised that Gun G/SP-013 was just around the corner, and I wanted to play a bit of 2m SSB and test out the alleged lift conditions.

The SOTA Beam SB3        Summit of Gun G/SP-013, with The Cloud G/SP-015 in the background (summit just to the right of the trig point)

Three hours were spent basking in the sunshine on the summit, while increasingly layering to keep out the increasing chilliness. It was lots of fun with 15 contacts on 2m SSB, 18 contacts on 2m FM and 2 contacts on 2m CW. The highlights were:

2m CW:

G4OWG Leeds, G0NVY Sleaford

2m FM:
GX4MWS/P Macclesfield & District Radio Society club field day, Rainow
GB50AS Middlewood scout camp, Worsley
GB0WHT Wilson House Trust scout camp, Crewe

2m SSB:
G0RQL North Devon, G3CWI/P Shining Tor G/SP-004, GM7PKT/P Geal Charn GM/WS-031

The final contact, the S2S with Robin was particularly pleasing, and probably the best DX, although I haven't checked. Most of the other contacts were conducted in a very leisurely fashion, unhurried and most developing into some pleasant natters.

Not a bad old day, despite the initial disappointments. Many thanks to all 35 stations worked, all on 5 watts:
