The weather forecast I had seen gave a miserable wet day for the Bank Holiday Monday, 30th May 2005, so I opted to stay low. As it was, it was another glorious hot sunny day, but I retained the same summit plans to good effect. This was the nearest WB to the campsite, and formed the SW end of a line of five SOTA hills between Hay and Ludlow. Our masterplan was to work along them as far as time would allow. The first job was to drive to Kington, then find the west end of the town and the path up the Ridge. This was done by following the signs for Hergest Croft, and then turning into Ridge Road (or similar). We parked as close to the top of this as we could, and strode out through the gate and onto the very straight green bridleway tracks along the crest of the ridge to the summit. Or in fact not. We actually stopped and bedded down between the heather at the 417m spot height within the disused racecourse, rather than walk the extra flat kilometre to the 426m summit.
At last, the Midlands Mafia were out (the original MM that is; I made a shedload of contacts into Stourbridge and Dudley during this holiday), and they supplied 3 out of the 8 contacts on 2m FM. We descended back to Kington, picked up mobile phone top-up, Explorer maps 189 and 202, and food for the later hills. Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 2.5 watts, except the last two on 5 watts:
