A long drive up the A483 after Y Golfa GW/NW-061,
took me up to Wrexham on Friday 23rd August 2013. I then followed the A541 and
then the narrow twisty country lanes, on which a bit of trial and error, and
guesswork was required to complete the navigation, without Jimmy, SatNav or OS
maps. I parked, as usual, in the farm on Mountain Road, and followed the
normal route, through a small field of young baby bullocks and then up the
hillside to the trig point. I set the 12m antenna up, hoping the band would
still be open after the first signs of life on Y Golfa
GW/NW-061.
Hence commencing with a S2S from Heinz OE5EEP/P on Wachtberg OE/OO-113 was a
very satisfactory start! This was the first of 8 QSOs on 12m CW. There followed
another 8 on 12m SSB, and a pleasing four on 12m PSK31. This time my 2m FM CQ
call after packing up was answered, and three contacts were added to the log,
making a total of 23 for the activation.
I drove down to the other end of Mountain Road and saw a large mast protruding
from the Hope Mountain Country Park. Further investigation revealed Brian 2E0HRO
operating the RSGB Centenary callsign GW100RSGB from his car.
An uneventful drive back across the M56 was accompanied with chats via the GB3VT
(Stoke-on-Trent 2m) and GB3PZ (Stalybridge 70cm) repeaters, before I could
properly congratulate Liam on his maths GCSE result and sit down to Marianne's
fabulous homemade steak pie. A good day all round.
