Mwdwl-eithin 2003

This summit was activated on Saturday 26th July 2003, by myself accompanied by Jimmy and Liam.  We followed a straightforward driving route of M56 and A55 to St Asaph, coming off here to follow the A road to Denbigh.  During this first stage of the journey, I worked Keith G0OXV/P on Winter Hill SP-010.  From Denbigh, we followed the A543 in a generally SW direction, past Bwlch and looking for a sharp bend in the road and a nearby gate access to the field and parking spot at the side of the road, as recommended by Roger MW0IDX.  This we found, and we walked up through the gate and followed the track up the very gentle incline of the hill.  On this part of the walk, I worked Shirley MW0YLS/P on Craig Cwm Silyn NW-020, using just 230 mW from my Standard C108 FM handy that I keep in my pocket for monitoring during ascents and descents.  As the land levelled off, and the track faded away, we set off across bog and heather directly towards the summit, but in hindsight and in future, we would continue in the same direction as the track and walk around the long way, keeping the walking to firmer grassy areas.  Either way, we came around to and joined the muddy path coming from the north and winding around the western base of the final hill.  We followed this track around the hill until we noticed a weakly defined but clearly used path to the summit.

The summit itself was most pleasant, flanked by two large cairns on either side.   In between, was the trig point - with the cap missing, allowing for easy mounting of the fishing pole without guys - and a stone wall shelter, about 2m square and 3 feet tall, and with enough large flat stones for us to sit comfortably on.  It was like having a ready built shack on the summit waiting for me!  The shelter was close enough to the uncapped trig point for the SOTA Beam feeder to reach into it, allowing me to operate from within the four walls.  Some of the stones provided a perfect fitting mount for the Yaesu FT817, while others were used to hang the rucksack on in such a way that it sheltered the rig from the occasional spells of light drizzle.  Perhaps Roger or Maggie & Josh had arranged the fixtures and fittings in this radio-friendly way on their previous activations!

I had been hoping to catch QSOs with Roger and Jenny on the RSGB Party In The Park event in Colwyn Bay, and work the special station GB90RSGB/62, but my monitoring and scanning of 2m FM was fruitless.  However, during the drive back up to the A55, I got strong signals from, and worked GB90RSGB/32 from near Chorley, Lancashire, and then on the M56 heard Keith G0OXV call, and so we QSYed to the GB3MP repeater and had a natter about the days activating and chasing.  We then continued on to the RSGB Party In The Park event at The Beacons, Frodsham.  I can certainly recommend that special edition RSGB 90 Year Ale, and could well now be persuaded to treat myself to a case - very very nice!

Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 2.5 watts:

G8TSE Wallasey Robert
G0OXV Ormskirk Keith
G6ZHL Lancaster Malcolm
G0KEN Bretherton Ken
M1FHM Tyldesley Alan
G7FIK Blackpool Sean
