This summit was activated by myself, accompanied by Jimmy and Richard G3CWI on Monday 15th August 2005.
The route today was a wide circular route selected by Richard, so from Pen Llithrig y Wrach GW/NW-013, we were to head off to the north and walk around the dam at the top end of Llyn Cowlyd reservoir before ascending Creigiau Gleision on the other side. Picking out this descent was quite tricky at times, and Richard was soon up with us and then ahead of us. Eventually at the dam, we paused for sandwiches and soup before contemplating our final ascent of the day. At this point, Jimmy decided to take the lead. He found a path that ascended to the summit, and set a cracking pace to the summit that neither myself, nor even Richard could comfortably cope with. However, it was a very useful bit of pace-setting that kept us in line with our target times for each stage of the day. We passed over the summit of "Creigiau Gleision" (as it is marked on the map - 634m) descended, and reascended up to the highest point at 678m.
I set up, called CQ and enjoyed the most fantastic pile-up, with no less then 8 stations coming straight back to me! These were worked, plus three more, plus the obligatory 70cm contact for you-know-who. This time, Richard finished a bit earlier than me, and we ended up setting off together for the descent. This descent was hard work through the relentless heather, and it seemed an eternity before we reached the good path by the stream that fed the reservoir. However, now the hard work for the day was complete, and all that remained was an easy 3km walk along good paths to the A5 and the car park.
We stopped off before reaching Betws-y-coed on the A5 for a meal. I can't remember the name of the hotel, but it is the one with the mountain bar in the back, with all the rocks and such. The food was very good, albeit at hotel prices. We were back at home by around 10pm, very pleased with an excellent day's walking. Callsign today was MC1SWL/P, International Short Wave League club callsign. Many thanks to the following stations, each worked on 2m FM with 2.5 watts, except G4BLH's 2nd contact, on 70cm:
