Raw Head 2003

On 11th January 2003, we completed our second SOTA activation of Raw Head in the Peckforton Hills.  From the A534 between the A49 and the A41, we found a little space to park up the road / track at SJ 514 539.  A good alternative (see below) would be to park at the Bickerton Poacher pub, SJ 522 544.  Hence we walked the clockwise route to the trig point this time.  In our 2002 activation, we parked on the minor road at SJ 521 551 and walked anticlockwise - very muddy, and dark (after it went dark on the way back that is!).  There are lots of trees on this summit, and both times I have had little joy from the trig point area.  There are clearings a couple of minutes walk each side of the trig point, one facing West and another facing North.   I have had to use both spots to rack up the mandatory 4 contacts!  Following the 2003 activation, we took lunch in the Bickerton Poacher, which turned out to be an excellent family friendly pub.  Very comfortable - large and spacious, children's play area outside, good beers, excellent food.  Children's meals were big portions and included drink and ice cream, but still standard cheap children's meal prices.  A fine range of bar meals were avaiable, but I couldn't resist the Whole Lobster Thermidore at a very reasonable £20!

Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 2.5 watts:
