Saturday 4th July 2015, and another gig, this time with Motown Gold. The venue was Aldwark Manor, North Yorkshire, a little north-west of Harrogate. The arrival time was specified as 5pm, so I set off shortly after midday in order to permit an activation. I drove up the A34, M60, M62 and M606 to Bradford, and then up the A629 through Keighley before working my way up the country lanes through the small villages.
The parking spot by the transmitter site is already - just - within the activation zone, and I was keen for a very quick operation. However, I walked a short distance up the path, but not all the way to the trig point before selecting a spot to set up. I put up the 10m/6m groundplane/vertical with trap antenna, but couldn't get anything at all on 28MHz. Fortunately, there was NFD activity on 6m, and this got me to three contacts easily enough.
But the fourth just wouldn't come. This was when I discovered that the 10m/6m vertical also worked reasonably well on 2m. Furthermore, the NFD event in progress had interest in that band too. I grabbed a couple more on 2m SSB, and got on my way to the gig.
