Ruardean Hill 2005

Liam, last to awake as usual!    Jimmy on the summit of Ruardean Hill WB-021    Click to return to summit index

Wednesday 1st June, we awoke to gloomy skies, and the prospect of packing the tent away in the rain.  Jimmy and myself set to work on this, and did as much as was possible before it became necessary to wake Liam up!  A good job was completed, and we were on the road by 9.40am BST, albeit with the tent fly sheet and bottom groundsheet (I always double groundsheet) in bin bags awaiting a decent day for drying out.

Tom on Ruardean Hill, trig point behind the fence!

We took the A438 to Hereford and A49 towards Ross-on-Wye.  The A4137 and B roads got us to Ruardean, where we simply followed our noses uphill until we spotted the trig point behind railings.  I then drove the car suitably downhill to a parking spot, so that we could make a person-powered final ascent!  Liam elected to wait in the car, so I left the handy on 145.475 for him so he could listen in.  He loved it!

Jimmy on Ruardean Hill

Jimmy and myself set up by the flagpole/beacon in the green opposite the trig point.  Mike G0WZY was straight in for a contact, then it was difficult.  I managed to mug two from a repeater, and then spent 30 minutes hunting and calling before G7HOC/M gave me the fourth and qualifying contact.  We returned to the car, damp from the fine drizzle, where Liam recited a full transcript of all my QSOs!

Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 2.5 watts, except the final contact on 5 watts:

G0WZY Hereford Mike
G0SYI/M Bristol Keith
G0ENF Lydney Graham
G7HOC/M Weston-Super-Mare to Bridgewater Darren
