We returned to
the A36 which was followed in the Ballymena (west) direction before turning
right on the B94 Broughshane road, and right again following the signposts for
Slemish. We parked in the free car park at the north end of the mountain, and
began our walk up out of the picnic / information / toilets area. The usual
route up Slemish GI/AH-007 is directly and steeply up the front of it. Having
done that way two years ago, I felt that the way we descended then would be a
better, slightly less steep way up for Liam. The problem with this was that it
was very difficult trying to "pick" where this "path" went up. We wasted around
30 minutes picking false trails until we did find the correct path up this
former volcano, upon which (Marianne assures me) St Patrick tended his sheep.
I worked
four Irish stations to claim the 2 points, all on 2m FM. We descended
the same way and listened to more "border-blasters" - Magic 105 and Kiss - en
route to the third and final hill of the day.
Thanks to the following stations, all worked with 500mW on 2m FM:
