Stiperstones 2005

This summit was activated by myself and Richard G3CWI, accompanied by Jimmy and Liam, and Richard's son Lewis on Saturday 22nd January 2005.    Click to return to summit index

From Corndon Hill GW/MW-013, we retraced our steps back to the Stiperstones turning off the A488.  Car expert Liam announced "There's Ian" from what appeared to be an impossible-to-recognise distance, but within seconds we did indeed pass en route to each other's summits.  We parked in the car park and set off together up the wide track, counting off the first two rocky outcrops before the one that contains the highest point.  Richard then decided that it would be improper to even begin to set-up before attaining the true summit of the Stiperstones.  I had activated here three times previously without bothering!  I was making some ground with my excuse-making before I realised that Liam was insistent on getting to the trig point.  Lewis and Jimmy were already at the top, and I realised that my option to stay on more secure ground was gone.  Sure enough, we all got up there, and it was not at all difficult.  It was also not at all necessary, and one of the best things about touching the trig point was knowing that I would never feel obliged to do so again!

Five contacts were made, with two summit-to-summits from M1BZJ/P on Winter Hill G/SP-010, and Ian GW7ADF/P on Corndon Hill GW/MW-013, far away in some foreign country somewhere.  The snow became heavier and fiercer in the wind, becoming horizontal during the activation.  It was heart-warming to hear John G4BVE/M telling us he had cancelled his second activation due to the "horizontal snow".  Richard managed the grand total of zero 40m CW contacts, and so yet again he blagged a stint on the FT-817 and SOTA Beam / WASP, and I got another go on the Waterlog.  We descended to the car and made a note to watch the weather, and the roads very closely on the drive over to the Long Mynd.

Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m, the first three in SSB, the fourth and fifth in FM, and using 2.5 watts apart from the final contact on 0.5 watts:

M1BZJ/P Winter Hill SP-010 Peter
GW7ADF/P Corndon Hill MW-013 Ian
G1INK/M Walker Barn Steve
G4BVE/M Oswestry area John
