We activated this summit on Friday 30th May 2003. We accepted an invitation from Richard G3CWI to have a SOTA day out together - Richard and his son Lewis (8), and myself and my son Liam (5). Richard kindly offered to drive, and hence a very relaxing day of SOTAing was enjoyed by myself!
We took the M6 down to J15, then the A53 through Market Drayton and towards Shrewsbury. It was then left down the A4117 close to the town of Ludlow. Into the village of Clee Hill, we took lunch in The Kremlin, which was very pleasant indeed. We returned a little way back down the A4117 and turned right (north) signposted for Titterstone Clee Hill, and drove up to the car park. We then had a mini-scramble up the first bit (although an easier ascent was possible), and a walk along the ridge by all the radar stations, to the trig point. Radio work was difficult with the high power radar facilities messing up my usually immune FT817, frequently showing "TX ERROR" and shutting down. We moved further back down the ridge to a better, but not perfect spot. One contact was made using the rubber duck, the rest with Richard's homebrew 2m dipole. A bit of an ugly summit with the surrounding quarries and radar installations on top. Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 2.5 watts:
