Titterstone Clee Hill 2013

The fourth and final summit of Wednesday 13th March 2013 was this one.  From Long Mynd-Pole Bank G/WB-005, I had to negotiate a horrid descent of the steep exposed road, in snow, down to Asterton, before dropping onto the A489.  This took me to the A49 which was followed to the outskirts of Ludlow, from where I took the A4117 in an easterly direction.  The left turn to take is actually signposted "Titterstone Clee Summit" which is rather handy!  This road was followed, taking care to avoid all the potholes, to the large parking area beneath the hill.

For a change, I walked along the road to the lower radio/radar station.  This was a much longer loop around, but it did allow me to have a good look at the quarry, which isn't really seen from the usual route, and realise how much of the hill has been removed by excavation.  Where the road ascends to the higher radar station, forms a sort of prong sticking downwards from the summit area, vaguely parallel with that which houses the normally used footpath.  I imagined the overall shape to be that of a lost tooth with prominent roots.

When the road disappeared into a locked compound, a route seemed to go up to the left.  This brought me uncomfortably close to a steep drop into the quarry.  A narrowly trod footpath the skirted the steep hill to wind around towards the upper radar station.  Only a few footsteps were taken before I lost my nerve and retreated!  My vertigo wasn't having any of that!  Back by the fence surrounding the radar compound, another trodden path went up alongside, and rejoined the road as it emerged from a (locked) back gate of the enclosure.  This was then followed to the upper radar station (often referred to as the "golf ball"), from where a trodden route continued to the trig point at the summit.

I set up the 30m dipole so that I could operate sitting down in the hollowed out summit shelter.  The radio traffic was a lot lower than earlier in the day, and just seven QSOs were made on 30m CW.  There was not enough time to add in Brown Clee Hill G/WB-002 in the day, for I needed to be back in Macclesfield before 7pm.  I would return for that one two days later.
