Bardon Hill 2003

This summit was activated by me in a solo expedition on Sunday 28th June 2003.    Click to return to summit index

Bardon Hill CE-004         Bardon Hill CE-004

After leaving Haddington Hill CE-005, I headed back towards Tring on the A41 then picked up signs to Dunstable along a B road. I picked up the M1 and drove northbound into Leicestershire. I left the M1 at J22 and took the A511 towards Bardon. I turned right into a housing estate, right again at the T-junction and another right into the last right turn before the end of the road. This was a residential street - Vercor Close, and after parking I took the footpath out through the end of the cul-de-sac and into the fields behind. It was still warm, but the temperature was starting to drop gradually, with a little breeze in the air. I followed the track up to the transmitting station on the summit, following which it was necessary to continue on a very loosely defined path under some trees to the trig point and a bit of a clearing on the quarry edge, with views out to the west and north. Four contacts were made on 2m FM into the East and West Midlands, but no sign of the regular Birmingham chasers. I reassembled to go on to 2m SSB, and made another four contacts, including a couple of the Brum regulars.

After reluctantly packing up and descending from this peaceful spot, it was up the M1, across the A50 to Stoke and up the A500, A34 to Congleton, where I collected a Chinese meal for Marianne and myself and had a pint in the adjacent boozer just in time to see Thierry Henry's golden goal for France in their final versus Cameroon, played under sad circumstances. Finally, a short run up the A536 led me to QTHR and the end of a very enjoyable weekend.

Callsign today was MX1SWL/P, club callsign of the International Short Wave League (ISWL) - see my radio page for more details.  Thanks to the following stations worked, all on 2m with 2.5 watts, the first four in FM mode, the rest in SSB:
