After Normanby Top G/TW-005 on Sunday May 28th 2006, we drove north, across the magnificent Humber Bridge (1.3 miles long and £2.50 toll charge). In Driffield, we decided it was tea-time, just as we parked outside a chippy. Jimmy partook in the traditional Yorkshire fishcake (two slabs of potato with fish sandwiched between, and all fried in batter) and I only just remembered at the last minute that you have to ask for salt & vinegar in Yorkshire! Before long, we had successfully navigated out of Driffield and were on our target A166 heading towards York. The summit of this road just also happens to be the summit of Bishop Wilton Wold G/TW-004. We parked in the lay-by by the trig point. Liam remained in the car listening to the ZZ Top CD that I had on, while Jimmy M3EYP and myself made the dramatic person-powered final descent to our operating position by the water board fence. I used the fishing pole rather than the WASP kit here, and again opened up on 2m SSB, but zilch. It was a shame that conditions were not seeming to favour this, as I knew there would be people listening for me, especially with Jimmy self-spotting, but then again, with our delays this was a very late activation, going on until 8.01pm BST. 2m FM provided the four contacts each, and we were on the road again. We reached Osmotherley Youth Hostel around 9.30pm and the dorm was full - which meant our late arrival consigned the three of us to top bunks.
Many thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 2.5 watts:
