Sunday 4th October 2020 I was awake at a very early hour, and so decided to get on the road out to the Wolds. My initial idea was to activate both Bishop Wilton Wold G/TW-004 and Normanby Top G/TW-005 in a long circular drive from Macclesfield, but ultimately time would run out, and I would have to set off home without visiting the Lincolnshire summit.
I reached the usual lay-by on the A166 beside the summit, but decided to veer off north down the side road at the western side of the trig point and covered reservoir enclosure. I looked for a suitable place both to leave my car, and where might have a viable take off for me to use my handheld transceiver. Despite to huge size of the activation zone on this vast plateau summit, there didn't appear to be too many options.
It was early though, so it was very unlikely I would be disturbed either by pedestrians or motorists. After self-spotting, I managed to get contacts with SOTA chasers Terry G0VWP (FM) and Phil G4OBK (C4FM). Phil in particular was delighted to have made a SOTA chase using the digital voice mode. Things were then very quiet! I ended up driving back to the A166, and over to a side road on it's south, as I hunted for a take-off in a different direction, like towards York. I did eventually get the required contacts, but with local time approaching 9am and a 2.5 hour drive home ahead of me, I had to rule out any prospect of a second summit activation.
