We arrived at our campsite in Clyro after an earlier activation of View Edge G/WB-018 on Saturday 28th May 2005. Jimmy and myself got the tent up and the sleeping mats and bags laid out, and we drove back into Hay-on-Wye to do battle with the crowds again. After my very costly wrong turning in 2003, I made trebly sure of taking the right road out of Hay this time, and we were soon climbing out onto the higher ground. I parked at the parking area/viewpoint where the Offa's Dyke Path begins to climb up to Hay Bluff. Once up the initial steep grassy slope, we paused for Derby scones and water, then followed the incline to the Hay Bluff plateau. The westerly wind was extremely strong, and we hardly dared anticipate its effect on the summit. We passed the trig point on Hay Bluff (an agonising 26m below the summit!) and continued on the flagged Offa's Dyke Path to the long summit ridge.
I was keen to operate as MW1EYP/P from G/WB-001 just for the sheer hell of it, so we strode out west from the path, which doubles as the England-Wales border. A bit of rock looked like it would provide shelter, but it would only take Liam, and Jimmy at an uncomfortable squeeze. I was stuck out in it, but after much difficulty, got the beam set up and called CQ. Nothing. Zilch. Not a sausage. Ultimately, I was forced to abandon my Welsh callsign-English Association summit experiment and head over to the eastern slopes for better shelter and better take-off. Still no takers, so a mercy call to G3CWI to get something on SOTAwatch. Still no regulars came in, but I now managed to get four stations into the Midlands, including Jim 2E0CHO again. We descended to the car, and drove into Hay to find the pubs and cafes more packed, just as expensive, the chippy queue well extended and the Co-op shut. It was 9pm, and we were left with no option other than a drive into Hereford for a fish supper in the car. Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 2.5 watts:
