Bradnor Hill, G/WB-011 - 391m ASL - SO 282 584 - OS Explorer 201 - 1 SOTA point Monday 20th January 2020 - Black Mountain GW/SW-041, The Begwns GW/MW-025 & Bradnor Hill G/WB-011 This would be the final summit of a cracking four day outing with Liam. From The Begwns GW/MW-025, we drove into the village of Kington then up the public road which actually reaches quite a high point on the golf course. We parked at the furthestmost point that public cars are allowed to reach. Liam opted to wait in the car, so I set off alone for the short walk up the remainder of the hill.
I found the summit cairn easily as I started to enjoy a very nice sunset. It was good to be called first by a fellow SOTA activator and chaser, Rod M0JLA in Hereford. Eventually, I made five QSOs and gained the activator point, but there was a (relatively) lengthy gap between the second and third calls which had me briefly concerned!
As the sun went down, it quickly went unpleasantly cold. The wind picked up and some squally rain came in thus exacerbating that unpleasantness. As soon as there were no more caller calling, I went QRT and returned to the car. Liam had been listening to my activation on the mobile rig!
As promised, the final port of call for the trip was the Maahis Indian restaurant at Ruabon on the A483. Their Welsh lamb special signature dish is absolutely stunning and highly recommended. Liam and I both ordered this, and enjoyed it greatlly. All that remained was to drive home, which we did, and thus completed what we agreed had been a very enjoyable trip.
