Thursday 31st March 2005 began with the usual early get-up, and breakfast of Ulster Fries in Larne town centre. The flask was filled with Baxters Luxury Broccoli, Stilton & Bacon soup, the only day we resorted to the tinned variety thanks to Captain Jimmy's culinary expertise. Today, we took things a little easier, and undertook three much shorter and much easier walks. We kicked off with Carn Hill GI/AH-010 near Carrickfergus in the south of County Antrim. The route was the A8 out of Larne, but where we turned right for Agnew's Hill GI/AH-005 yesterday, we turned right on the B100, which became the B99 and the B58, all signed Carrick. It was then a case of carefully navigating through the country lanes until we found the farm access road J352887 we were looking for. A new fence and gate ran across the farmyard compared to two years ago, so we couldn't use the same parking spot, and space was otherwise non-existent. A little way back down the track towards the road, a lady in a house, a separate property to the farm, asked if we needed any help. I explained we wanted to walk up Carn Hill and were looking for somewhere to park. Immediately, she offered us a slot on her large driveway. We thanked her and set off.
From the farmyard, the track swings around and starts zigzagging up hill towards the transmitters that it serves. On the way up we were greeted by scores of enthusiastic tame sheep and their new lambs. Little did they realise we were not about to share our soup! We set up on the fence near the summit, about 7m away from the trig point, and 1m lower down. This gave us slight shelter from the biting wind as I worked four stations, including MD3KSN poached from the Isle of Man repeater, and George GI4SRQ keeping up his 100% record and making it 9 out of 9! We descended to the car and set off for Tobernaveen Hill GI/AH-009. Thanks to the following
stations, all worked on 2m FM, the first two on 2.5 watts, and the second two on
5 watts:
