This summit was activated by myself, accompanied by Jimmy on Saturday 26th June 2004:
I anticipated that the driving route between CE-003
and CE-001 had capacity to be tricky, and so it turned out. Staying on local
roads we got to Bishop's Cleeve, then Southam and Prestbury as planned, but then
realised that we must have missed the country lanes across to the south of
Cleeve Hill (the summit, not the village) when we reached the A40. Still, at
least I knew what to do from here. Straight down the A40 in the Oxford direction
until a left turning for Whittington, through the village and along this lane
until the right for Cleeve Common. There were some road closed signs up here,
but thankfully as it turned out, they referred to an unneeded road further up,
and not our route to the summit. We parked in the area outside the transmitters
on Cleeve Common, and took the short walk across to the highest point marked by
a trig. Like last year, the cap was missing, so no guying required! The weather
was murky, with even more drizzle, so another fairly quick activation was in
order.
It was then A40 to Oxford, M40 to M25 to M4 towards London, and across to Twickenham for the annual get together of the British DX Club. A few too many pints of Monk Ale at the Barmy Arms by the Thames, and then a superb Indian meal in one of the local restaurants before retreating back to the B&B with Jimmy and other BDXC members who also happened to be stopping there. Jimmy & I wore our SOTA T-shirts to the meeting, which were noted and commented favourably upon by the others. |
