After a "day off" from SOTAing, where went to visit St Davids, Britain's smallest city, it was back to a 5am get-up on Wednesday 22nd August 2012. This time though, long distance driving was not on the agenda, and it was a quick "nip" up the road from Llys-y-fran, through Maenclochog and Rosebush, and up into the Preseli Mountains. We parked in a large area at SN074321, ready to set-off for an early morning walk beside the Pantmaenog Forest.
The path was generally OK albeit wet and boggy in places. As we reached the end of the trees, we were able to join a short section of gravel track which got things motoring along somewhat. This was all too brief though, as we resumed walking on moorland grass up a gradual slope. Jimmy informed me of a gate we needed to go through as we gained height, and then took a compass bearing for the summit, as the visibility was so poor.
We attained the trig point, but found a cold wind across the summit. I left Jimmy to attempt the impossible by trying to get 2m FM contacts from a handheld + rubber duck in remote Pembrokeshire at 7.30am in the morning! Of course, this was fruitless, and Jimmy realised this soon enough to bags first dabs on the FT-817 after I had erected the 20m groundplane. He made 7 contacts on SSB, which was then aced, marginally, by my 8 on CW.
The descent was straightfoward enough, and we drove north-west towards the coast for a second activation of the morning on Mynydd Carningli GW/MW-033.
