This summit was activated by myself, accompanied by Jimmy & Liam on Saturday 10th July 2004.
After Hail Storm Hill SP-009 and lunch, we made the short drive up to the lay-by on the bend in the A681 Todmorden road, arriving at 1.25pm. By 1.40pm, there was still no sign of Myke G6DDQ, so we decided to start the walk, reckoning that the sight of Penelope by the road would be a dead giveaway to Gwendolyn that we were en route, and fair game to be caught up with Liam exhibiting his finest snail's pace.
Drawing on last year's vile experience of the Rossendale Way path through waterlogged
fields and back and forth over rampant barbed wire, this time we took the lower of the two
tracks - the Limers Gate path. This one remains a firm track virtually all the way
to the summit and enjoys a very gentle, hardly noticeable gradient, in contrast to other
logical routes up from the Britannia side. There are a number of waymarked paths
shooting off to the right, but the Freeholds Top one is not until passing the first big
"mine". July weather it was not - cold, damp and very windy - so at the
summit we huddled in between the wall and the fence and enjoyed reasoanble shelter.
We wondered if the absent Myke may be waiting at the summit, since we did note that
Gwendolyn would have made it up most of the track, but still no sign. The summit was
qualified, and we set off for our 1 hour walk baclk to the car, accompanied for most of it
by Mike G4BLH via the handy. By the time we returned to the lay-by, Mike G4BLH was
there to say hello for the first time in person. Thanks to the following stations, all worked on 2m FM with 0.5 watts:
