Tuesday 8th October 2019 - Garway Hill G/WB-013 & Aconbury Hill G/WB-024 Gig: Simon Faulkner Band Venue: Great Tythe Barn, Tetbury I originally had a couple of nights on the road for this week. But this would grow and grow! A last minute call from Simon Faulkner had me heading south a day early - the two gigs already booked in were theatre jobs in Croydon and Folkestone. This extra gig in the Cotswolds saw me making an early start from Cheshire and down the A49 through Shropshire, stopping periodically to check accomodation booking enquiries in Youth Hostels and Theatre Digs! I did get one confirmed in an AirBnB in Dursley, so at least I knew I had a comfortable bed for the night!
I drove to Garway Hill, SSW of Hereford. I found a spot to park beside the transmitter access road to the NE of the summit. From here, I followed the PROW through the farm at the top of the track and across the common to the summit. With one eye on the clock - thinking of getting a second activation in before soundcheck - I first attempted to qualify just using VHF handheld. Contacts were not easily forthcoming, but I did manage to get the four, and in probably overall less time than if I'd have gone through the processes of setting up and taking down a shortwave antenna. I walked quickly back to the car, and instructed the satnav to take me to Aconbury Hill G/WB-024.
