Glyder Fawr, GW/NW-003 - 1001m ASL - SH 642 579 - OS Explorer OL17 - 10 SOTA points
We followed with more graded path north from Tryfan GW/NW-006 to pick up the Miners' Path on the ridge and doubled back towards Glyder Fach. This was in preference to the brutally steep and loose ascent directly up from the saddle. Progress across Glyder Fach and onto Glyder Fawr was a bit stop-start with tricky underfoot sections, and the odd little scramble over rocks.
This was our second summit on Monday 8th August 2016. It was supposed to be the second of four, but it would in fact turn out the be the last! We reached the summit, marked only by a cluster of spiky rocks, and found what little space we could to semi-comfortably sit down. It was another 2m FM hand-portable style operation, but we achieved the contacts required with relative ease.
After enjoying our Lobster Bisque from the flask, we set off on the traverse towards Y Garn GW/NW-004. At this point, we intended squeezing in at least this as one more summit for the day. The killer to that idea was the grotesque steep and very loose scree descent down to the saddle. It took me an absolute age as I did most of it by shuffling along on my backside. When I eventually caught up with Jimmy, I regretfully advised him that it was too late to continue, and we needed to descend. We turned right and returned to the Ogwen Valley via the Devil's Kitchen.
It was still 9pm by the time we got back to Idwal Cottage YHA, so too late to go out to one of the local pubs for an evening meal. I purchased some ready meal style Italian meatballs and a pack of spaghetti from the youth hostel reception and cooked it in the members' kitchen, so we got fed at least. Afterwards, we did take a drive out to the Bryn Tyrch Inn for some beer and Wi-Fi. The plan for the next morning was for Moelwyn Mawr GW/NW-016.
