Great Orme 2016

This was an ad hoc bonus third summit on Friday 12th August 2016, the final day of an excellent week in Snowdonia. We had earlier completed a superb linear walk over Moel Eilio GW/NW-022 and Moel Cynghorion GW/NW-30 with Simon G4TJC, but wanted to wring a final piece of action from the day, and the week!

It was extremely windy as we arrived on the Great Orme car park around 6.40pm BST.  This made it feel rather chilly as well.  We had to be careful with our car doors such was the force of the wind.  A few years ago, I well recall witnessing a public bus having its front windscreen completely blown out on this very car park!

We walked up beside the summit buildings and to the trig point, and then beyond on the slope down towards Llandudno Pier.  This gave a decent sheltered spot, which was necessary if our antennas were to stay up, not to mention a degree of comfort for ourselves.  I set up my end-fed longwire antenna for some HF work, while Jimmy put up his SOTAbeams MFD.

For the first time on this trip, Jimmy struggled to generate traffic on VHF.  After a quick opening QSO, he found himself receiving only silence for the next 40 minutes or so, but that could have possibly been the multitude of radio signals from the masts up there desensing Jimmy's RX.  I had little difficulty qualifying on 40m CW, but even that wasn't exactly buzzing.  It did turn into a bit of a "get the contacts, and clear off" kind of thing, as we were getting tired, cold and hungry.

Thankfully, the contacts did arrive in a little cluster at the end, and we were able to call it a day.  We drove up into Colwyn Bay to find one of our favourite Indian restaurants, only to find it no longer existed.  Jimmy said "What about that curry house we always pass on the A55?"  Great shout I thought, and so we headed to find it.  Well I think the section of dual carriageway it backed onto was actually the A494.  It was the Amantola near Queensferry, Deeside, and we had a good meal in there before driving home on the M56.
