Long Mountain-Beacon Ring 2004

This summit was activated by myself, accompanied by Jimmy & Liam on Thursday 12th August 2004:    Click to return to summit index

We fancied adding to our activations record today, but didn't really feel like (or have time for) a 'proper' walk. So we set off for BVE-land at the lethargically late hour of 9.30am, and even stopped en route for a breakfast and purchase of lunch items.  We arrived on the road that runs over the Long Mountain and walked up the track and beyond the transmitters. Before setting up, we decided to head into the wooded area to find the trig point - we didn't bother in our previous December activation. The trig was found, and we headed back out to the edge of the Beacon Ring MW-026, where the Offa's Dyke Path runs along it on its west side. We set up and quickly worked BVE and YLS. I commented to Shirley about how nice it was to be able to ragchew before the four contacts were in the bag without stress - so much different to 12-18 months ago!   That was Famous Last Words indeed, for then followed 20 minutes of silence and a change of battery required, before G8ALB was worked. Then lots more silence until I gave up and shifted the entire station around to the east side of the ring to point towards Stoke and Birmingham. This did the trick, and a station to qualify the activation was worked immediately. He then mentioned that he had been listening to me calling for the past 40 minutes, so thought he would answer my call....!

It was then a decision between moving on to activate Mynydd-y-briw NW-060, or accept an invitation to have a cup of tea round at John BVE's QTH.  We made the wrong decision!

Thanks to the following stations worked, all on 2m FM with 0.5 watts:

GW4BVE Pool Quay John
MW0YLS Llay Shirley
G8ALB Birkenhead Mal
