Long Mynd-Pole Bank 2013

The next summit, after Stiperstones G/WB-003, on Wednesday 13th March 2013, was Pole Bank, the highest point on the Long Mynd.  After driving up from Bridges and passing the Shooting Box car park, I turned right and followed the road down to the start of the track at SO414939.  I parked here and made the short walk to the summit.

At the summit were a couple having a picnic, so I chatted to them for a while before setting up.  The summit was otherwise deserted, and I didn't intend hanging around for long, so I erected my antenna right at the summit, and used the topograph for a seat and shelter.  The activation passed without noteworthy incident, and 7 minutes of operating on 30m CW brought in 17 QSOs.

Now that might have been unremarkable and unexciting, but the next bit wasn't!  Some snow was falling, but as plenty of other cars seemed to be making the trip up and down the steep road beyond the Midland Gliding Club, I judged it to be reasonable.  Well soon there was a jam as two cars in front of me had to retreat into roadside spaces to allow a car towing a trailer with a glider on it up the hill.  There wasn't any space for me to do likewise, so I had to reverse virtually all the way back to the gliding club!

This time I was able to get down the hill without being impeded by oncoming traffic, but it was so horribly steep, and scary with a "death plunge" lurking to the right hand side of the road, that it was a painstakingly slow descent.  There was snow on the road, and the tension in my right calf muscles was soon very much more than anything experienced on the earlier steep ascent of Corndon Hill GW/MW-013!  At the bottom, I pulled in for a rest after that most unpleasant experience, and got tucked into my flask of chicken noodle soup.  It was then a longer drive across to Titterstone Clee Hill G/WB-004.

So after Corndon Hill GW/MW-013 on Saturday 16th November 2013, the final activation of the four summit day was Long Mynd-Pole Bank G/WB-005. Except that I didn't go to Pole Bank!  It was well after dark of course, and I was tired at the end of a long day. But I knew that the Long Mynd offered the opportunity of a very easy activation in darkness simply by taking advantage of the activation zone rule.

I parked at the Shooting Box car park at SO420953. I then donned the headtorch and followed the path opposite to the subsidiary mound at SO419949, marked as a 508m ASL spot height. With Pole Bank summit standing at 516m ASL, and a saddle between them at 502m ASL, I was comfortably within the permitted vertical distance here to select it as an operating position.  I was pleased to work three regular North American chasers on 24.900MHz CW, but then everything dried up. I even tried answering other stations' CQ calls to get that elusive fourth contact, but it was not to be. Then I realised that I had got the all-important 12m Challenge multiplier for this summit and that no points were on offer having already activated it earlier in the year. So I took the decision to pack up and head home.

While packing away, a group of scouts on a Duke of Edinburgh training walk came past. They were actually rather rude and cheeky, not the norm for scout groups. I decided not to rise to their silliness and simply ignored them. To my surprise, a scout leader then passed just a few seconds behind them.  The journey home to Macclesfield passed easily courtesy of a two hour QSO with Jimmy M0HGY on the GB3VT (Stoke-on-Trent) repeater. A very satisfying and enjoyable day.
