Thursday 31st August 2017 was forecast to suffer poor weather for most of the morning, ruling out any major summits. Instead, we headed out to Criccieth to visit our old friend from Macclesfield, Sean MW3PZO. After a brew and a natter, we had killed enough time to get towards the end of the heavy rain, so we drove back up through Bangor and across the bridge onto the Isle of Anglesey.
It was still raining as we pulled into the car park at Mynydd Bodafon, so we waited things out in the car before heading on up to this very easy and quick summit. I fancied a change and set up the 15m GP antenna - and was rewarded with a good number of QSOs from all around Europe. Jimmy found things much quieter on 2m FM, but stuck with it to get his qualification.
It was nice to meet MW6SPN, who happened to be out for a walk in the area. I settled back down to continue on 15m, which seemed to be performing rather nicely, albeit not spectacularly.
This was soon curtailed! Gradually rising levels of static noise on the band were matched by a gradually advancing wall of opaque grey! This was first spotted behind Bangor, but slowly but surely made its way over the Menai Strait. When it made landfall on Anglesey, I decided it was time for a sharp exit. We packed up quickly and got down to the car!
We were just about safely back inside the car just as the first drops of rain hit. But then strangely, the downpour never really got going in the way it threatened. Too late now, we were on our way back to the mainland, and a drive along the A55 to Llandudno, and the summit of Great Orme GW/NW-070.
