Seat Sandal 2005

So, to Friday 2nd September 2005, and we had to begin the day with the inconvenience of packing away sleeping bags, clothes, camping equipment and the tent.  Nonetheless, Jimmy and myself are getting pretty efficient at this now, and it was done inside the hour (it is actually a large 4-man tent we use), and we were on the road just before 9.00am.

Because we were a little later than usual, it meant that Booth's in Keswick would be open, and so we went there for some posh packed lunch stuff, that included dressed layered crab, Moroccan style lamb pie, smoked haddock, egg and leek pie and spicy pepper sausage.  From Keswick, we took the A591 down towards Grasmere, parking in the lay-by at Dunmail Raise.  This was to be a repeat of a circular walk recommended by John G3WGV last year.

We ascended up Raise Beck, which I thoroughly enjoyed, climbing up by the gushing streams and mini waterfalls.  Soon, Grisedale Tarn came into view, and we turned right at the cairn to climb up by the wall for Seat Sandal G/LD-022.  Despite the existence of the much appreciated footprint steps, I still found this hard going, and moreso than last year.  I guess this could be as a result of being on my fourth consecutive long walking day!

We set up in the shelter, with the SOTA Beam making its debut on this summit (last year was grabbed with a handy).  I opened with yet another S2S with Dave M0DFA/P on Blencathra G/LD-008 and worked four further regulars before there were no other callers.  We packed up and began the steep descent to Grisedale Tarn, ahead of our next summit - Helvellyn G/LD-003.  At this stage, Jimmy began to get a long way ahead of me, and his better fitness and stamina over mine over four days was beginning to tell.

Thanks to the following stations, worked on 2m FM (using callsign GX4MWS/P - Macclesfield Wireless Society club callsign) with 1 watt:
