Sharp Haw 2004

This summit was activated by myself, together with Jimmy and Liam on Friday 23rd July 2004.    Click to return to summit index

From our earlier activation of Boulsworth Hill (Lad Law) G/SP-008, we headed through Colne, Earby (A56), towards Skipton (A59), left onto the A65, then immediate right through Skirton. On one of the sharp right-hand bends, there were cars parked by the start of the path, and we added to that number.

The objective now was Sharp Haw G/NP-029, and I had done my homework! I used the Yahoogroup reflector archive to search for this summit and found G0OXV's activity report. Confirming what I had interpreted from the map, Keith bemoaned his "hard work" ascent from Flasby, as opposed to a gentler gradient and higher starting point from SD 975 539 to the South East of the summit. This follows a bridleway, and you need to be alert to the fact that it stays only breifly with the stone track before branching off to follow on green path to the right. However, navigation is easy, the path heading in a straight line for the summit, which is clearly visible, trig point and all, from 1 mile away. There are also nice views of Ingleborough, Fountains Fell and Pen-y-ghent to the North. The path gets steeper, and reaches a wall with a bench. We crossed the stile for a photo-shoot at the trig point, then returned to sit on the bench, taking advantage of the wall sheltering us from the strong wind.

Another easy activation, with 11 stations worked, although some were duplicates, as we carried on the recent move towards 70cm. Still 8 distinct stations though, and all known SOTA regulars (what a difference a year makes!). We then enjoyed a very pleasant late afternoon stroll in the warm sunshine downhill back to the car, driving home for 7.15pm.

Thanks to the following stations, all worked using 2.5 watts:

G4OWG Leeds Roger 2m
