Stingwern Hill 2004

This summit was activated by myself, accompanied by Jimmy & Liam on Thursday 26th August 2004.    Click to return to summit index

After Heath Mynd WB-007, we were then going to go to Y Golfa GW/NW-061, but when I looked at the road atlas upon returning to the car, I decided to head instead to Stingwern Hill GW/MW-030.  I had not done this one before, and didn't even have an OS Explorer map for it.  I stopped in the various village shops along the way, but none could offer me sheet 215, just the neighbouring ones.  Nonetheless, I pressed on to the small lanes encircling Stingwern Hill.  This was going to be a trial & error game, to (a) identify the hill, and (b) find the best access to it.  On my intended turning, overhead cables were hanging very low and blocking the road, so I had to continue onto New Mills and turn back from there.  The lane ascended, went across a staggered crossroads and then forked into two.  I tried the right fork first, but could not find any path going onto the hill from there.  I turned back and went down the left fork, and found a gate and track that curved around up towards the summit.  I have since acquired a copy of OS Explorer 215, which indicates a PROW running very close to the summit, and a concessionary path to it.  None were in evidence as far as we could tell.

I took the car back up the lane to park on a grass verge between two gates (just about the only place round here to put a car without blocking the road - and, as it turned out, right by the start of the PROW) and then walked back down to the gate & track with Jimmy and Liam.  We walked around the gently ascending track, before we then needed to walk more steeply up the ridge towards the summit.  We set up by the trig point, and got the four contacts in just over half-an-hour.  Particular thanks to Graham G4JZF for reminding me that I was now GC4BJC/P!  From the summit, we descended directly down the hill to where the car was parked.
