After Corndon Hill GW/MW-013 on Wednesday 13th March 2013, I made the short drive across the Wales-England border, briefly up the A488, then back onto country roads towards the village of Pennerley. At the T-junction, I made the error of turning left, and into the actual village of Stiperstones. I didn't need this, what I needed was The Bog. (As in that was the sign I should have followed). Realising my mistake, I turned back and went the other way. This road climbs high into the hills, and to a car park at 400m ASL.
The familiar path up to the Stiperstones was taken, and the last bit on uneven jagged rocks piercing through the soil was as uncomfortable as ever. You had to watch where you were putting your feet! Again it was breezy and cool, so again suitable shelter was necessary. This was found of the summit rocks, and I set up the 30m dipole here.
This turned out to be my best activation of the day in terms of QSOs, and 30 were made in 17 mad minutes on 30m CW! After descending, I drove down the hill into Bridges, then up past the youth hostel onto the Long Mynd. The next summit was Long Mynd-Pole Bank G/WB-005.
On Saturday 16th November 2013 I drove down to Stiperstones G/WB-003 in Shropshire, where I met Nick 2E0FGQ for a joint walk and activation. Fine drizzle greeted the start of the day, but conditions soon eased for a dry walk up and activation. Nick was here to film some footage for the first episode of TX Factor.
Low cloud prevented any views for the first hour or so, but this was a long and relaxed activation, and eventually the views cleared although it did remain overcast. Main operation was on 12m CW with 22 QSOs, but one contact each was made on 12m PSK31 and 12m SSB. A handful of 2m FM QSOs to finish brought the activation total to 32.
After descending, I said farewell to Nick who was driving back to Somerset, while I decided to head next for Heath Mynd G/WB-007.
