Shortly after 3pm on Sunday 3rd September 2006, we were back in the car after activating Caer Caradoc G/WB-006, our 23rd out of the 24 WB summits, and 26th out of the 27 we had hoped to do in the six days we had available. We had time to complete the journey, so it was with a good feeling that we drove up the A49 and A5 to Junction 7 of the M54. Here we turned right before the start of the motorway, and the short distance down to the parking spot at SJ 637 092. There is space here for lots of cars, but there are usually lots of cars here, especially at weekends. We managed to find a vacant slot, and slotted ourselves in.
This was another very familiar walk to us, having been up here several times previously. We walked quickly around the lower reaches in the woods and past the small cafe, before turning south-westwards and following the crest of the ridge more steeply uphill. We were feeling both fit and motivated, and we summited in particularly quick time. Moving a short distance away from the summit, and back towards Heaven Gate at SJ 630 083, we set up the equipment and settled in for this last activation of the holiday.
This proved to be a very satisfying activation with many stations worked, congratulations received and even a surprise summit-to-summit at the end. We felt slightly victorious as we descended The Wrekin, and enjoyed a hassle-free drive back to Macclesfield. Jimmy and I both had INSET days to look forward to tomorrow; that meant work for me and a day off for him! We celebrated our activation success and safe return to Macclesfield with a slap-up curry in the Weston Balti Raj, before going home for some much needed shut eye. Many thanks to the following stations, worked as follows:
