Walton Hill 2013

After Worcestershire Beacon G/WB-009 on Friday 30th August 2013, the plan had been to make for the M5 for the route to Walton Hill G/CE-002. However, I was mindful that it was Friday rush hour, and so turned on the 'TA' feature on my RDS car radio for any traffic news. Sure enough, I soon learned that this whole stretch of the M5 was gridlocked, and so we followed the A roads through Worcester and up to Kidderminster.

Once in Kidderminster, it was a known route up the A456 past Halesowen and turning right at a roundabout signposted "Clent Hills". Folling my nose uphill, I soon found the signpost for "Walton Hill" and shortly the car parking area by the start of the path.

It was still shirt sleeve order, and Liam and I had not layered up whatsoever on all seven activations of the past couple of days. Even now with the time approaching 8pm, we remained content to lounge around in our T-shirts. It was another successful 12m qualification on Walton Hill, with 14 on the 17 contacts made on the SOTA Challenge band. The breakdown was 8 on CW, 1 on PSK31 and 5 on SSB, before grabbing 3 on 2m FM with the handie prior to descent.

The drive back to Macc was uneventful, but we could be satisfied with a most enjoyable couple of days in the Welsh Borders region.
