On Saturday 15th July 2006, we activated White Hill G/SP-006 and Easington Fell G/SP-012. The first of those gave Jimmy a full set of activations for the 17 SP summits, and took Liam to 16 out of the 17 ascents. The second meant that by the second day of the Pennine Way, Jimmy should have a full round of SP activations within one calendar year - and the third time I have completed the set in a year.
This was our final expedition before the Pennine Way, and we were hoping it would not be as hot as this on the Way, although as dry would be nice! We took breakfast at McDonalds at Baxendon, just off the A56, and continued up via Clitheroe to White Hill G/SP-006, passing Easington Fell G/SP-012 en route. We parked at Cross of Greet, 4km NNE of the summit, and walked in from there. Our previous two ascents of this hill were with the prior written permission of the landowner, but it has since become access land, and there were new gates and information boards to show for it. The route underfoot was still the same though, an unpredictable lucky dip of springy grass and heather, bog, peat and animal holes.
The activation at the summit went well with plenty of contacts, pile-ups in fact, on 2m FM and 2m SSB, and the Spicy Parsnip soup was still surprisingly agreeable in spite of the blistering heat. Following descent, we drove back to Waddington and picked up some extra water to refill Liam's already empty 2 litre bladder. Then it was a case of retracing the earlier route back up to the usual parking area for Easington Fell G/SP-012. Thanks to the following stations, worked on 2m FM with 2.5 watts, except the last four on SSB:
