Aconbury Hill 2006

So to our fourth of five activations on Wednesday 30th August 2006.  We navigated the country lanes away from Seager Hill G/WB-022 and towards the village of Fownhope.  From here we were able to find our way through the lanes to a suitable parking spot at SO 506 325, from where we began the walk into the woods.

We began in waterproof jackets, but they were not really necessary.  The interlude of damper colder weather soon gave way to a rather warm summer evening.  The stroll through Aconbury Wood was almost flat, requiring barely 50m of ascent over a third of a mile to the summit.  The summit trig point was in a heavily wooded area, so we moved 50 metres or so to the north where the edge of the escarpment looked out northwards over a felled area, affording good views and viable VHF take-off.  The contacts were not as easily forthcoming as earlier activations today, but we were still done and dusted inside half an hour.  First in the book was Carl G0TQM/P for our second summit-to-summit contact of the day.  This time he was on May Hill G/WB-019, prompting me to enquire as to whether he was following us!  Back at the car and loaded up before 5.30pm, and the fifth activation of the day - Burton Hill G/WB-020 remained a possibility.
