Bryn Amlwg, GW/MW-015 - 488m ASL - SN 921 973 - OS Explorer 215 - 1 SOTA point SOTA road trip, Day 1 - Saturday 1st August 2020 From Garreg-hir GW/MW-017, I continued in a westerly direction through Mid Wales. I parked right at the end of the cul-de-sac lane leading to the entrance for Carno Wind Farm. As it was the end of a long day, and I was very tired, I decided to make the most of SOTA's activation zone rule. The activation zone for this summit covers a vast area over a wide plateau. I studied the contours carefully and walked along the wind farm road (continuation from the public road) until I was comfortably beyond the 470m contour.
This was at a junction of tracks, and I found a grassy area nearby to erect the 17m groundplane antenna. After the "warning signal" from the previous summit that legacy modes (CW & SSB) might cause qualification to be somewhat time-consuming, I went straight to FT8. This proved to be a sensible decision, and the qualification came quickly and easily. I could now focus on where I was going to sleep that night, and I had pretty much decided that this would be a summit campover in my backpacking tent on Bryn y Fan GW/MW-018.
