Cyrn-y-Brain 2003

Starting point for this summit is the popular Ponderose cafe SJ 192 481 on the A542 Horseshoe Pass, same starting point as for NW-042 Moel y Gamelin.  This cafe car park always features hoards of motorbikes, and with all the colourful flags, you can't miss it.   So it was on the 22nd March 2003, we left the Ponderosa behind and followed the Land Rover track up to the summit.  Looking at the map, we noticed what appeared to be a short cut path from SJ 201 485 to SJ 206 486, which we followed.  This was a mistake, as we waded slowly and irritatingly through deep trackless heather before rejoining the main track.  The later descent, suffice to say, followed the track all the way!  The summit of Cyrn-y-Brain is marked by a cairn outside the first wireless station reached on this track.  A further mile would take you to Sir Watkin's Tower and a trig point, but this is in fact 2m lower than the first summit cairn.   Activation was pleasing as it included my first Welsh SOTA to SOTA contact, plus a first time contact with Graham G4JZF, well-known WAB organiser.

This photograph depicts my operation on Cyrn-y-Brain NW-043.  Jimmy (my regular photographer) took this picture.
