Holyhead Mountain 2013

On Friday 6th September 2013 I secured a pass out for a run out to Anglesey, but only after I'd dropped Liam off at college, so it wasn't an early start. The M56 and A55 were fine, so I was parking in the pay and display (£2 for 4 hours) in the country park just beyond Holyhead, by around 11.15am local.

Summit of Holyhead Mountain        Holyhead Mountain

The views over the Irish Sea rocking in against the rocks and cliffs were very pleasant on the early part of the ascent. I could also watch the Stena Line begin its journey to Dun Laoghaire. I missed the left fork off the main track and continued ahead. Once I realised I had gone too far, I spotted another faint track going uphill on the left. I followed this, but it did then require a steepish drop back onto the path I should have been on!

Great sea views from this summit!        German visitors on Holyhead Mountain

Here I met a group of walkers from Germany. They were on a sailing trip and had been up the English and Welsh coast and even visted the superb Antrim coast in Northern Ireland. After meeting their request to take of group photo of them, I walked with them on the final ascent to the summit and enjoyed a pleasant chat.  As on The Cloud G/SP-015 the previous day, I was trying out a multiband HF aerial. However, my main focus was of course 12m. But try as I might, I could not solicit any response at all to my calls on CW and SSB. DX could be heard - for instance a very loud JA station (who couldn't hear me) - but there was nothing from Europe and so perhaps the vertical would have done better in such conditions.

I did manage two contacts on 12m PSK31 - Steve G6LUZ, and then, pleasingly, AB4JK in Virginia. John GW4ZPL/P was added on 2m FM following which I made 9 contacts on 40m - one on CW and eight on SSB, including S2S with Dave G6DTN/P on Christ Cross G/DC-005.

I had chosen Anglesey for the outing as it seemed to be the one and only "hole" in the rain radar, with the rest of the UK forecast for an all-day drenching! The theory held well for Holyhead Mountain, with the whole expedition in lovely weather.  I then drove the car back a bit down the A55, then across the island's country lanes to the parking area for Mynydd Bodafon GW/NW-071.
