Moel Gyw 2004

Liam reaches the summit plateau of Moel Gyw!    The un-hidden treasure atop Moel Gyw!    Click to return to summit index

From Hope Mountain GW/NW-062, we took a 20 minute drive to the Motel at the point where the Offa's Dyke Path crosses the A494, and parked in its car park. After Hope Mountain, looking the map it seemed more logical to do Moel Gyw first before Moel y Gamelin GW/NW-042, even though we had entered them the other way around in the SOTA Diary.   We then walked along the ODP to the south end of Moel Gyw, then turning back and following the path up to the summit. This is a lovely walk, as seems to be confirmed by all who do it. Atop Moel Gyw is a cage, opened, inside which is a cabinet, opened, inside with is a repeater! This appears to be there for the taking for anyone who wishes to put the effort into carrying it down! Liam had a good investigation of it while I acitvated, but also declined the oppotunity of nicking it. 6 contacts were made, including Mark, Charlie and Alan again.

Jimmy, the SOTA Beam & the cairn on Moel Gyw     Jimmy, the trig point, and the poorly repeater!

We descended, and as we crossed the road back over to the motel car park, I heard "Hi Tom" in an unmistakeable voice. The voice is unmistakeable, as it is the most un-Macclesfield accent one ever hears in the Pack Horse in Macclesfield! Yes, would you believe it, there was my fellow Maxonian and summiteer Richard G3CWI and son Lewis, just about to commence a walk up Moel Gyw! The meeting was pure coincidence, with neither party having any knowledge of the other's plans! Richard and Lewis had left Macc even earlier than us Read boys, and had already activated GW/NW-055 that morning.
