After Snowdon GW/NW-001 on Thursday 11th August 2016, we drove over to Anglesey and towards this "old favourite" summit. There was still a chance the weather could play up, so we wanted a short, trivial summit that allowed us to leg it back to the car if needs be! Even though we had tucked into Oggy pasties in Llanberis, we had our mulligatwany soup to get through on this hill too!
As it turned out, the weather remained dry throughout the activation, even though the skies remained menacingly grey! It did in fact start raining quite heavily at the end of our descent just as were we getting back into the car - but by then, that was fine! Although the walk up this little summit is short and very easy, it always seems a little less short, and a little less easy than I always remember it!
The trig point here was featured as the main photo on a previous QSL card of mine, so I suppose I'll always have a certain affection for it. And I always enjoy operating from summits with extensive sea views - that is very pleasant indeed! I had just been using 2m handheld on my Snowdonia activations thus far this week, so it was a nice change to rig up a HF aerial and tuner, and get the FT-817 out. It was also nice to make a healthy number of contacts on 20m, 30m and 40m, and a couple to finish with on 2m. Jimmy persisted with 2m FM on this lowly summit, but still made more than enough.
The drive back to the hostel was through some very heavy rain that we had successfully managed to dodge being out in. After an excellent evening meal and relaxation the previous evening, we returned to the excellent Tyn-y-Coed Hotel for food and beer. A relatively successful and enjoyable day, despite it not being the day we'd planned or hoped for. We would be back on the original schedule the next day, with a traverse of Moel Eilio GW/NW-022 and Moel Cynghorion GW/NW-030, with our friend Simon G4TJC.
