From Mynydd Sylen GW/SW-036 on Monday 20th August 2012, we reversed our route back down the road and through Pontyberem on the B4306. Plenty of parking space was available in the wide track entrance at SN478128, by a gate into a field. The first job was to negotiate a safe route past a very lively and inquisitive miniature pony on a very long tether! Thereafter, it was a nice easy short walk up a very gentle grassy slope to the trig point.
As usual, I set up the 40m dipole and got cracking on CW while Jimmy 2O0EYP/P flogged his dead horse with the 2m FM handheld. In actual fact, he did manage to work Don G0RQL in Devon, but that served only to raise false hopes. He was forced to go onto 40m SSB after I had worked the eight chasers that called me. This was to prove the pattern for all the holiday activations, resulting from Jimmy forgetting to pack the feeder cable for his SOTA Beam! This wasn't the only technical issue, for I had found a wire slipped out of the Powerpole connector on my FT-817's battery patch lead. This had to be placed back into the connector each activation, with something placed on top to ensure it stayed down and in contact. Thankfully, this always worked!
Jimmy's first contact on 40m SSB was a nice one - the London Olympics special event station 2O12L. He was soon qualified, and we could crack onto the day's third summit, Pen-crug-melyn GW/MW-036. Not before we had got past the naughty horse again though, which even tried to bolt out through the gate after Jimmy had opened it!
