Boulsworth Hill 2004

This summit was jointly activated by myself and Mike G4BLH on Friday 23rd July 2004, accompanied by Jimmy and Liam.    Click to return to summit index

Guarding against the possibility of She Who Must Be Obeyed refusing to sanction visits to any DC or SC summits on our holiday, scheduled for the following week (thankfully didn't transpire - see G/DC-003, G/DC-005 & G/WB-009), Jimmy, Liam and myself set out to Lancashire today for a day in the hills.  And very nice it was too.

First objective was Boulsworth Hill - Lad Law G/SP-008. As we drove towards the Burnley area around 9am after our traditional McDonalds breakfast, we raised Mike G4BLH on 2m, who indicated that he fancied joining us for a stroll. This was excellent news - Boulsworth is not one of my favourites - a bit of a dreary slog - but had to be done with being so close to another full SP completion! So some surprise extra company was very welcome.

We retraced last year's route, parking between the reservoirs and approaching on the Pendle Way before branching right up the hill on the United Utilities concessionary circular footpath. It was very windy on the top, and try as we might, beam headings remained a "spin the bottle" affair.  Nonetheless, the summit was qualified quickly, and the gear was handed over to Mike who couldn't raise anybody on his handheld with HB9CV. Oh the joys of the FT817 and SOTA Beam! Mike then too qualified the summit swiftly, and we packed up and enjoyed another gentle stroll back to the cars.

Jim, Liam and myself then hunted for food over which to contemplate our second summit, while Mike returned home, clearly suffering from the trauma of me being on a summit and him not being able to claim any chaser points!  He had a look of determination that he was going to be securely in his shack in time for my next summit!

We drove no more than a quarter of a mile before finding our food, at Coldwell Tea Rooms (also/formerly an activity centre?). Pie and peas at £2.20 each multiplied by three went down very well
