From the Cowpe parking spot for Hail Storm Hill G/SP-009, we returned to the A681 to head Eastwards, through Bacup and out onto the Todmorden road, still the A681. We passed the usual lay-by on the double bend, and actually parked on the wasteland by the start of the Limer's Gate Track. We walked along this track (never again will we do the Rossendale Way route - see 2003), a couple of flat miles winding around the old quarries and mines, until it was time to do a small graded ascent by following the blue marker posts.
There was a great view of Gorpley Reservoir as we ascended, and soon we were setting up in the shelter of the wall a few yards from the trig point. Fourteen contacts, including Roger MW0IDX/P on Penycloddiau GW/NW-054, Steve G1INK/P on Seat Sandal G/LD-022 and Simon MW1AVV/P on Moel y Gamelin GW/NW-042, were made. We descended the same way, and were forced to endure an obscure sight as we reached our parked car. Also parked in this area of land was another vehicle, the driver of which looked in his fifties. He was stood outside his vehicle, in the cold wind, in nothing but a pair of black underpants. He didn't have Tarzan's figure, and I didn't dare to ask him what was going on! We stopped briefly for a drink between Bacup and Rawtenstall, and were home for 6.15pm. A most pleasant day out. Thanks to the following stations, worked as follows:
